I first started using Macromedia Director in Houston when I was in the Core Program as a way of animating my drawings. This was in 1994, which was before (I think) flash was around. I used it for some projects (mostly as an animation tool) in 1998-1999, and then got a job building shockwave games for a company called carbon14, which later morphed into Kick Media, which later morphed into being out of business. It turned out to be the last gasps of the dotcom boom, and I'm glad I got some of that internet money before it was all gone. But that's another story. A boring story.
The last version of markallen.com was flash based and (not suprisingly) a lot flashier than this version. I still think it's cute but it was too much trouble to update so it's frozen in amber at it's date of creation, sometime before the great y2k crisis.
Most of the shockwave games I made at carbon14/kick media. This was a particularly nice set up, in that I worked with a number of fantastic designers and animators - all I had to do was the programming. Here are some that I like.
Hot Tub Al, in which the aforementioned attempts to master a seriously lame old skool move. Name and concept by Dave Bravenec, who makes nice shirts. Chris Martinez did the design on this one.
Surf Game. Produced for (I think) OP, notable for it's Tron influenced wave design. Video of myself dancing and acting like an idiot in a wet suit was rotoscoped for the surfer animation by Alejandra Jarbado. Design by Adrianne deLoia. Sound by Lem Jay Ignacio.
Terror Lift 2000. Our attempt to make an "extreme" winter sports game, Terror Lift 2000 stars a mean-spirited girl in a snowsuit, throwing snowballs at skiers below her as she rides the ski lift. Be on the lookout for errant bears, aliens and other surprises. Sound Lem Jay Ignacio, Animation Alejandra Jarbado, Design Miki Kato.
XY Files. Made for Movieline. Attempt to match the fake celebrity offspring with their likely parents. Easier to play than to describe. Sound Lem Jay Ignacio, Design Miki Kato.
Surf Dance. We reused some of the animated outtakes from the Surf Game to make this interactive toy. Sound Lem Jay Ignacio, Design Alejandra Jarbado.
Here's some cute "fan" mail I got around this time
